FIU Landscape Architecture is the only program of its kind in the tropical and subtropical region of the United States. The unique natural and cultural environments of South Florida, tropical America, the Bahamas, and the Antilles provide firsthand experience of a wide range of landscapes. We focus on projects that have local appeal with worldwide relevance in making landscape architec-ture a central part of city life and urban planning, while viewing the discipline as a piece in a larger discussion about public space, and the city and its relationship to the environment. The Department’s continued engagement and informed decision making with city and urban landscape issues provide students and the community with a deeper understanding of landscape and its relationship to the urban fabric. Projects such as the design studios for the City of Sweetwater and Opa-Locka, in collaboration with FIU’s Metropolitan Center and partnerships with Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden are but a few examples of the program’s relationship and commitment to the community.Working with architects, city planners, civil engineers and other professionals, landscape architects play an important role in environmental protection by designing and implementing projects that respect both the needs of people and of our environment. Meeting human needs by making wise use of our environmental resources is work that is in demand today and will continue to be required in the future.
